Obsessive. Compulsive. Definitely!

"Did you put the remote control in its proper place before you left the house?" my mother-in-law asked me as we arrived at her place for a visit.

"Yes!" I said!

I was pleased she had asked.

She knows me only too well.

You see, I have this little ritual before I leave the house.

Not only does the remote have to be facing the TV, but it has to be parallel on the living room side table.

And not only that, but the beds have to be made, the kitchen has to be clean, the dishes put away, the litter boxes cleaned, the slippers out of sight, the floors swept, the dining room chairs aligned straightly, extending approximately six inches from the table, the towels hanging straight.

You get the picture.

I feel it is a projection of Feng Shui, the ancient oriental art of energy orientation.

There must be something to it.

The belief is that good energy swirls around order and cleanliness.

And that bad energy is brought forth by clutter and disorganization.

Thousands of years of believing in such a thing can't be wrong!

I am simply doing my part to encourage "good energy" to swirl around our home.

My office.

My volunteer duties.

Some people say I am a Type "A" personality.

I definitely hope that I am not.

Perhaps that stands for "Annoying."

I prefer to believe that I simply have a mild case of OCD.

I was dismayed to learn, after watching an episode of Dr. Oz, that having the urge to align things symmetrically, can be a symptom of OCD.

Obsessive compulsive disorder is the technical term.

I do not feel that I have any sort of disorder.

I simply like things in their place.

A place for everything, and everything in its place, no?

The universe aligns when everything is aligned, yes?

Those closest to me have told me they believe my tendency to want things in their place has been heightened recently.

The flower vase on the dining table has to be centered.

The toilet seat lids have to be closed.

The shoe mats have to be perpendicular.

The shoes themselves have to be aligned and not willy-nilly.

I don't think I am asking too much.

I think that if more people were slightly more concerned about the positive flow of energy around organized objects, there might be more positive energy in the world!

Just a thought.

It makes me happy to have order.

To have everything in its place.

And I am proud to perhaps have a small "disorder" that promotes "order".

I think it is quite ironic, in fact.

As I put the dishes away.

Hostage Taking

Dear Mrs. Raccoon; I would like my garden back please. I know you are raising your five adorable babies in the window well under our deck. I know you need a safe space to do so, and thought that would be suitable. Well, you have worn out your welcome. I am sure they are big enough to move along to a suitable forest. I know one just down the street. I realize they are still nursing on you. I can see you all through our basement window. A clear view of your nursery. And yes, your babies are cute beyond reason. Snuggly and cuddly and who wouldn't want to just pick them up and kiss them to death. It is you, Mrs. Raccoon, who has put the fear of god into me. I am afraid of you, to be quite frank. Ever since that afternoon last week when I was enjoying a snack out on the back deck. I saw you out the corner of my eye, as you came up onto the deck and wanted some of that snack! Thankfully I had a broom handy - just in case - and was able to wave you away. ...

The Best Kept Secret

When I was first hired by CKVR-TV as an anchor and reporter back in 1993, I was living in a small apartment in Richmond Hill. I was happy to commute back and forth in my little Honda Civic, up and down Highway 400. There was no way I was moving up to Barrie. That was farm country. Where the rubes lived. It even had a Co-op store, where country bumpkins bought their farm feed and supplies. The only culture that city had was agriculture. Imagine! I was better than that! I had been born and raised in the thriving metropolis of Oakville, then we moved to Brampton when I was a teenager.   I even lived in Montreal for several years while in my roaring twenties, for goodness sake!  La creme de la creme of culture and sophistication! Well, after three long years of driving up and down that Highway 400, surviving snow storms and other harrowing highway experiences, I succumbed. In 1996, I moved up. Literally and figuratively. And I have, sinc...

Blue Zones

There are a few areas of the world where people regularly live to be 100 years old. They happen to call them Blue Zones. Not because they are full of blue haired people. But because someone just circled the areas in blue marker on a map. There are five such communities and they are in Italy, Greece, California, Japan and Costa Rica. Scientists have studied what it could possibly be that allows or causes the residents in these locales live to be so old. They have narrowed it down to a few things. Among them are food, exercise, and socializing. All of these places are somewhat remote. Isolated slightly from mainstream culture and society. I personally feel it may have more to do with the food than anything else. There is likely no chance these people consume any processed food whatsoever. Everything they eat is from the land, or made directly from ingredients from the land. Whether it be protein, dairy, vegetables, wheat, rice, etc. Not a chemical to b...
